Ubuntu moved from lean to fat. There is so much junk in a default Ubuntu install, you might want to look at the Linux Mint version of Ubuntu. If I had Linux Mint installed next to Ubuntu, I would count the differences and might switch.
The main reason I stay with Ubuntu is the Ubuntu Alternate install with some control over the disk configuration. If Linux Mint had an equivalent, I would test Linux Mint.
Here is some of the fat I removed. I removed a big chunk of fat before starting to write this and will have to expand the list if I clean up another Ubuntu desktop.
Some of the fat is optional. For example, if you need support, you might need to give someone remote desktop access. You might be able to use some of the fat from Ubuntu. There is also a high chance that you will have to install something completely different.

There is junk on your computer from previous installations. Run Computer Janitor to remove this stuff.

Here is some stuff I would like to remove but each one removes a prerequisite and you lose the Ubuntu desktop package which checks for updates. I might experiment with these some other time.

The Ubuntu description says this package is sending information to Ubuntu without my consent. I tried to remove it but it said removal of the package would remove The Ubuntu standard system
and The Ubuntu standard system is recommended to to ensure proper upgrades. Screwed.
This is exactly the same way that Microsoft lock Internet Explorer into Windows by building in artificial connections. You cannot remove it. Fortunately there is a configuration setting to disable it.
Does Linux Mint have the same type of problem? Some online pages say Linux Mint includes the package but switches the default to off. Another reason to switch to Linux Mint.
