GnuCash

GnuCash is at release 2.4.2 but2.4.2 has a problem with databases. I installed 2.4.0 for this test.

Download GnuCash from www.gnucash.org. The download is 90 MegaBytes and the installed software totals 300 MB.

Documentation

There is a stack of documentation online including German versions of everything plus some of the documentation in other languages. GnuCash installs a big tutorial and starts the tutorial the first time you use GnuCash. I have not found a way to remove the tutorial after use.

Preferences

Select Edit then Preferences to change the GnuCash setup.

Accounting Period

Select the Accounting Period tab in Preferences to select the start and end of this year/quarter/moth, the exact use is not stated in the help page.

General preferences

Select the General tab in Preferences. There is supposed to be an option to select how you will store your data, in XML or a database. You can also turn the splash screen and tip of the day off.
